No, Management is Not a Profession

Business leaders aren’t like lawyers or doctors, whose abilities are measurable by their knowledge of specific subject areas, writes Richard Barker in the Harvard Business Review. Barker argues that leaders are generalists, able to draw together connections between other’s fields of expertise in order to for the group to achieve new heights. Good leadership can’t be taught directly, Barker concludes, but can only be absorbed through first-hand experiences and on-the-job mentoring.
