We’ve been running around with the theme of narcissism this week. In that light, this week’s #articlesoffriday features a stunning example of narcissistic leadership: the Tiger Oil memos. From the offices of the now-defunct but at one time Houston-based Tiger Oil Company come a total of 22 enormously entertaining memos; all sent by, or on behalf of, the firm’s incredibly amusing, painfully tactless, and seemingly constantly angry CEO – Edward ‘Tiger Mike’ Davis – to his staff. Little is known about the man himself (some background can be gleaned here) and in 1980 his company filed for bankruptcy, however some years ago his inter-office communications thankfully appeared online for all to see.

Great post. I really enjoyed reading the memos and greater thanks to the individual that saved them. It often hard to believe that narcissism in leadership like this exists, but the reality is it does and is prevelant. It’s also good to contrast with the communication skills of individuals. Thanks.
Welcome Chris. I’m thankful that almost 30 years after someone was subject to his terrible leadership, they found a way to turn it positive and release these memos for us to laugh at.
